The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has begun renovation the F-10 roundabout, also known as McDonald Chowk, to prevent future traffic congestion. This change comes in response to concerns raised during the construction of the Jinnah Avenue flyover. Since the project aims to ease traffic flow in Islamabad, CDA decided to take additional steps to improve connectivity near F-10.

Key Changes in the F-10 Roundabout
CDA has selected to completely replace the roundabout with “fish belly” U-turns rather than renovating it. Nespak, the consulting firm for this project, designed the U-turns to allow better traffic management along Jinnah Avenue and Nazimuddin Road. These U-turns, placed 500 meters apart, will give drivers sufficient time to change lanes and reduce the risk of accidents.
Moreover, CDA’s goal is to create direct road connectivity without requiring complex tricks at the roundabout. As a result, traffic blockages that could appear near the newly built flyover will be avoided.
Financial and Structural Details
Initially, there were demands for constructing an underpass at the F-10 roundabout. However, CDA concluded that U-turns were a more practical solution, both in terms of time and cost. Under the existing contract terms, the contractor can take on additional work of up to 15% without requiring a new agreement. Savings from modifying the Jinnah Avenue underpass design will cover the cost of the renovation effort.

Progress and Expected Completion
The underpass for traffic direction from F-10 toward Blue Area was partially completed last month. Meanwhile, the flyover for traffic moving from F-8 to F-10 is still under construction. Once finished, these upgrades will significantly improve traffic flow on Jinnah Avenue.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invested the Jinnah Avenue project, highlighting its importance for easing urban traffic. With work already underway to dismantle the roundabout, CDA expects the project to be fully completed within 100 days.
Why This Change Matters
By replacing the roundabout with U-turns, CDA aims to minimize future maintenance needs and improve road safety. The U-turns will not only reduce construction costs but also enhance traffic flow efficiency. Consequently, drivers can expect smoother commutes once the project is complete.
Conclusion
CDA’s decision to replace the F-10 roundabout with “fish belly” U-turns represents a significant step in modernizing Islamabad’s road infrastructure. With its focus on safety and cost-effectiveness, the project promises long-term benefits for residents.
