CDA to Appoint Consultant for Stadium Design
During the high-level meeting, Minister Naqvi expressed frustration over delays and instructed CDA to accelerate the planning phase. To meet the deadline, the authority will hire a consultant to develop the stadium’s blueprint. This move aims to ensure that Islamabad finally gets a world-class cricket facility.
Potential Location Near Margalla Hills
Although officials have not confirmed the exact location, reports suggest that CDA may construct the stadium near D-12, at the foothills of Margalla Hills. Previously, authorities planned to build a stadium and a hotel in this area to boost sports and tourism infrastructure.
Pakistan’s Largest Cricket Stadium
According to initial plans, the Islamabad Cricket Stadium will be the largest in Pakistan, with a seating capacity of over 50,000 audiences. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will oversee construction and aims to complete the project within five years. Under the agreement, PCB will lease 280 kanals of land from CDA for 99 years, with revenue split 70:30 in favor of PCB.

Past Delays and a Fresh Start
Islamabad has long awaited a state-of-the-art cricket stadium, but previous attempts faced delays. Earlier, the Supreme Court stopped a similar project at Shakarparian, citing environmental concerns. This time, CDA and PCB are working together to ensure that the new stadium meets legal and environmental regulations.
Islamabad’s Rapid Infrastructure Development
Officials also discussed several other major projects during the meeting, including:
- Margalla Road extension to ease traffic congestion.
- Faizabad traffic improvement plans for better mobility.
- A new Safari Park, chairlift, and zipline to promote tourism.
- Commercial development along the Islamabad Expressway to boost economic growth.
These initiatives highlight the government’s commitment to making Islamabad a modern and well-planned city.
Final Thoughts
The decision to finalize the stadium’s design marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s sports industry. With government support and PCB’s involvement, Islamabad could soon host international cricket matches at its first-ever world-class stadium.
