CDA Plans Two New Dams in Islamabad To Cope Up with Water Scarcity

Islamabad: With 2.3 million people living in and a daily need for 126 million gallons of drinking water, Pakistan’s capital city is experiencing a severe water crisis. Unfortunately, there is a big gap in fulfilling the city’s needs as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is only able to generate 70 to 80 million gallons per day from already existing dams in Islamabad.

Islamabad’s existing water infrastructure consists of 201 tube wells and 3 dams i.e. Simly Dam, Rawal Dam, and Khanpur Dam. These dams in Islamabad have not been able to make up for the lack of water supplies due to lowering of water table in region partly because of erratic climate induced changes in water cycle. The CDA has announced plans to construct two new Dams in Islamabad – Shahdara Dam and Chinyot Dam, along with two additional dams that are anticipated to be finished in the next four years.

  • Shahdara Dam will generate 6-7 million gallons of water daily
  • Chinyot Dam will generate12-14 million gallons per day
  • Total additional will generate18-21 million gallons per day

Hopefully, after the completion of these dams, the scarcity of water will be reduced. In addition, the CDA has promised that the Dutara Dam water supply project will be finished in the next four months, giving the city’s citizens some temporary respite.
